In this chapter, I will discuss how Turkish American women build their sartorial practices while honouring religious convictions and navigating what Cainkar calls ‘cultural sniping that comes through in gendered forms of nativism’ (2009: 229–30), and how non-Turkish women build on Turkish dress ideals. How do these women ‘feel good’ about what they wear (Woodward 2005)? How does their ‘emotional labour’ and their moments alone before the mirror ‘anticipate the sartorial judgments of others’ (Syed, Ali and Winstanley 2005: 151; Woodward 2005: 23)? The insights I present are drawn from interviews with thirty-five women who are part of the newly forming Turkish American community in Houston and who frequent its newly built houses of worship and cultural centres.2
